ASH BORER – “Cold Of Ages”

2012 album from the Northern California-based Black Metal band. With a style of raw Black Metal that is bleak and atmospheric as well as harsh and searing, the group is aligned with such elite artists as the (now defunct) Weakling, Xasthur and Leviathan, along with the Black Twilight Circle (Volhan, Arizmenda, Dolovotre, etc.) and the Rhinocervs cult (Odz Manouk and Tukaaria). Their first demo, released in 2009, was just a mere glimpse of the coming sonic storm unleashed over the following years: a split EP with Santa Cruz's Fell Voices, an acclaimed self-titled debut album, and a series of decimating live shows. Cold Of Ages finds Ash Borer at the height of their powers, one of the most important acts hailing from the American scene alongside the likes of Negative Plane, Avichi, Inquisition, and the aforementioned Black Twilight Circle and Rhinocervs horde. A darker and much more devastating work than the debut, Cold Of Ages is a surging, twisted, primal and sprawling epic and will find its place among the most prominent black metal releases of the year.
